‘Man of Sorrows’ depicts the broken body of Christ on the cross. In drawing this piece I was reminded that as we learn, it is often from the very same things that we have learnt before, only that we are seeing or understanding them with new eyes. So it was for me with this piece. Jesus was a broken man. It is through his ‘kerosis’ or self-emptying, so dramatically portrayed on the cross that the bible speaks of our own redemption, or own self-emptying. As the American artist Bruce Herman said, “I want to be known as a broken man" - broken out of compassion for others.
